Sutco Transportation Specialists (part of The Sutherland Group) is in search of a Vice President of People, Safety & Culture to join our team. This position can be based out of West Kelowna or Salmo BC.
The VP’s role is to provide leadership, organizational development and strategic planning to continue the growth and expansion of The Sutherland Group. This position will require a seasoned leader who can implement systems and structure in both Human Resources and Health & Safety.

Responsibilities and Duties:
- Ensure all actions incorporate ‘Sutco’s 7 Commitments’ while working on behalf of all the companies in The Sutherland Group.
- Lead the development and implementation of HR and H&S strategic priorities, values and commitments across the organization.
- Oversee the design, development and delivery of progressive HR and H&S programs, policies and initiatives that maintain our founding values and culture.
- Engage and collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team and other internal stakeholders to ensure the development of industry leading strategies.
- Provide strategic advice to the organization’s leaders to address complex issues and ensure people impacts, risks and opportunities are factored into planning and decision-making.
- Responsible for the design, delivery and integration of a comprehensive inclusion strategy, to ensure we are designing systems that support true equity and inclusion.
- Ensure HR and H&S roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, understood and acted upon by managers, supervisors, Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee members and all employees.
- Coordinate at a minimum an annual review of the Occupational Health and Safety and Human Resource departments program using SWOT principles.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Proven experience at an executive level in both Human Resources and Health & Safety.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation combined with training in hazard recognition, assessment and control.
- Comprehensive knowledge of employment standards and Human Resources legislation.
- Bachelors’ degree in HR, Safety or relevant field.
- Considerable tact and discretion when dealing with employees, managers and external stakeholders on HR and H&S issues.
- Must possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to confidently represent the company at events, make presentations and speak to groups on behalf of the company.
- Strong organizational, planning and management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with critical thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to thoughtfully and effectively present technical analysis.
- Must maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s license and the ability to travel to the USA.
- Understanding of/or experience in the Transportation Industry is an asset.
